Ever wondered whether the artist Henri Matisse had any seriously talented descendants who made beautiful and functional pottery? Well, wonder no more. His great-grandson Alex Matisse founded East Fork, a pottery studio in North Carolina that produces unadorned pieces that resist fashion and trends in their simplicity. But their focus on form and function doesn’t make them any less beautiful. The raw North Carolina Piedmont clay is molded into plates, bowls, mugs and pots using artisanal methods that result in small variations, so each one is unique. The final products are durable designs, making them restaurant-quality, dishwasher and microwave safe. They even make a ‘toddler cup’ for little hands that should withstand the most terrible of twos. Fork, yes!
